Rep. Lou Schmitt of Altoona has been appointed as the Republican chairman of three subcommittees in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Among these, he will lead the Subcommittee on Railroads under the House Transportation Committee.
"As the son and grandson of men who worked on the railroad in the rail-rich history town of Altoona, I am well aware of the critical role trains play in the prosperity of our state’s economy," Schmitt stated. "I look forward to working with my colleagues on issues related to Pennsylvania’s rail system to ensure it is a viable and safe means for transporting people and cargo across the state."
Schmitt has been actively involved in enhancing safety conditions on Pennsylvania's railways and holding rail companies accountable, particularly following a significant train disaster near Ohio's border with Pennsylvania. In his new role as subcommittee chairman, he aims to continue these efforts.
Additionally, Schmitt will serve as Republican chairman for two other subcommittees: the Subcommittee on Fiscal Policy under the House Appropriations Committee and the Subcommittee on Government Integrity and Transparency under the House State Government Committee.
Earlier this legislative session, Schmitt reintroduced House Bill 99, aiming to update Pennsylvania's Right-to-Know Law for the first time since its enactment about 15 years ago.
"These subcommittee chairmanships will allow me to have a much louder voice in Harrisburg and will give the residents I am privileged to represent a larger platform to have their ideals and ideas heard," Schmitt commented.
