Several fire companies and emergency medical service providers in the 79th Legislative District have been awarded nearly $90,000 in funding. The grants were provided through the Office of the State Fire Commissioner’s Fire Company and Emergency Medical Service Grant Program, as announced by Rep. Lou Schmitt (R-Blair) and Sen. Judy Ward (R-30).
“The funding will help these vital emergency service providers continue to answer calls for help in our community,” stated Schmitt. He expressed gratitude for the first responders' dedication to serving their neighbors, emphasizing that their work does not go unnoticed.
The departments receiving funding include:
- Altoona Logan Township Mobile Medical Department Authority: $15,000.
- City of Altoona Fire Department: $16,322.
- Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department: $13,955.
- Lakemont Volunteer Fire Company: $15,461.
- Logan Township United Fire Department: $27,891.
“These annual grant awards support the needs of our fire and EMS providers so they are equipped to help those who call on them in times of desperate need,” said Ward. She highlighted the essential role first responders play in rural communities and acknowledged their commitment and hard work.
The grant money is designated for enhancing emergency services operations. Specifically, it must be allocated toward facilities, equipment, debt reduction, training, and education. Career departments also have the option to use funds for overtime costs related to covering shifts while firefighters attend training.
