Sen. Judy Ward, along with Reps. Kerry Benninghoff, David Rowe, and Perry Stambaugh, have announced the distribution of over $460,000 in grants to support fire departments and emergency medical services in Juniata and Mifflin Counties. The funding is provided through the Office of the State Fire Commissioner’s Fire Company and Emergency Medical Service Grant Program.

“These annual grant awards support the needs of our Fire and EMS providers so they are equipped to help those who call on them in times of desperate need,” stated Ward. She emphasized the vital role first responders play, particularly in rural communities.

Benninghoff highlighted the increasing demands faced by first responders: “Ever-increasing demands on our first responders mean they are fundraising, training and doing administrative work in addition to helping people in crisis.” He noted that these grants aim to alleviate some of these burdens.

Rowe expressed pride in supporting this funding: “Our firefighters and emergency medical responders put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities safe. These grants will ensure they have the tools, training, and resources they need to do their jobs effectively.”

Stambaugh acknowledged the extensive responsibilities shouldered by first responders: “The same people fighting fires or responding to EMS calls in our communities are often overwhelmed with fundraising, doing extensive paperwork, undergoing training, or tackling additional administrative tasks.”

The funds must be used for facilities, equipment, debt reduction, training and education. Career departments may also allocate funds for overtime costs when backfilling positions during firefighter training.
