Senator Judy Ward has announced that the Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority (PBDA) has allocated a grant exceeding $1.6 million to Mifflin County. The funding aims to enhance internet access within the community.

"Broadband access is critical in today’s modern age, and libraries play an essential role in providing it to local communities," Ward stated. "Through this grant funding, Mifflin County and its library will be better able to provide broadband access and continue in its mission to connect, educate and serve its residents."

The project will involve building renovations and improvements to increase the library's capacity for workforce, education, and healthcare initiatives. The public library already functions as a site for education and enrichment. Investments like these ensure that libraries and other non-profit organizations remain vital community hubs.

This grant is part of a larger $45 million initiative funded through the federally supported Multi-Purpose Community Facilities Program. It aims to improve high-speed broadband access for essential services such as work, education, and health monitoring by utilizing community anchor institutions.

To ensure transparency and track progress, PBDA mandates grantees submit quarterly and annual reports detailing project advancements and adherence to federal standards. A final report due three months post-completion will assess the project's impact, sustainability efforts, and equity considerations. The last 10% of funding will be released only after this report undergoes a thorough review.

This investment aligns with Pennsylvania's broader goal of strengthening community infrastructure by creating accessible public spaces that support work, education, and health needs.
