On May 16, 2024, a bridge in Blair County was dedicated to Army Pvt. William E. Green, who was mortally wounded on Sept. 9, 1952, while serving in the Korean War. The signage of the bridge will bear his name as a testament to his service and sacrifice.

The dedication ceremony was attended by Green’s family along with Rep. Jim Gregory (R-Blair) and Sen. Judy Ward (R-Blair/Fulton/Huntingdon/Juniata/Mifflin). The naming of the bridge was authorized through Act 17 of 2023.

During the event, Gregory stated, “Pvt. Green represents the best of us.” He added that "the signs for Pvt. William E. Green Memorial Bridge will help us all reflect on his service, honor and sacrifice as we use this busy road. His commitment and patriotism are aspirational.”

The newly named Pvt. William E. Green Memorial Bridge is located on Pa. Route 36 (Woodbury Pike) over Halter Creek in Blair and Freedom townships and is used by approximately 6,800 motorists daily.

Green was a graduate of Roaring Spring High School and worked as a machinist for the Pennsylvania Railroad before being inducted into the U.S. Army where he served in Company A, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Division. Known affectionately as “Scoop” by his loved ones, Green was serving as a member of the machine gun squad when he was killed in action in the Satae-Ri/Heartbreak Ridge region of North Korea. He is interred at Greenlawn Cemetery.
