Sen. Judy Ward (R-30) recently chaired a hearing with the Senate Aging and Youth Committee to discuss the challenges and opportunities within Pennsylvania's children and youth services agencies. During the hearing, Ward emphasized the importance of these agencies, stating, "County children and youth agencies provide a vital tool and service, helping to protect children across Pennsylvania."

Pennsylvania's child welfare system, which is state supervised and county administered, plays a critical role in safeguarding children from abuse and neglect. These agencies provide a range of services to support families and ensure the well-being of children in need. Kelvin Abrashoff, the director of Children and Youth Services of Huntingdon County, was among the key individuals who provided testimony during the hearing.

The Department of Human Services, Children's Advocacy Centers of Pennsylvania, and the Pennsylvania Children and Youth Administrators Association were also present to share insights on the current landscape of children and youth services in the state.

Ward highlighted the significance of supporting these agencies, stating, "Our children are one of our greatest assets, and we need to do all we can to ensure that the agencies tasked to protect them have the tools and support they need to succeed."

The ultimate goal of children and youth services agencies is to provide a safe and nurturing environment for children, even if it means temporary substitute care in foster family homes or child caring institutions. Testifiers at the hearing emphasized the importance of healthy and safe reunification for children in need of care.
