Feb. 6, 2024 - In response to Governor Josh Shapiro's latest budget address, Representative Lou Schmitt (R-Altoona) has expressed concerns about the excessive spending proposed by the governor. Schmitt argues that if the governor's budget proposal is approved, it would result in a depletion of the state's savings account and an increased burden on hard-working Pennsylvanians through higher taxes.

Schmitt highlights that the governor's spending plan calls for an overall budget increase of $3.7 billion, bringing the total budget to $48.34 billion, with $2.4 billion allocated for new spending alone. According to Schmitt, this level of spending is completely unsustainable and would lead the state and its taxpayers into financial ruin.

"The governor's budget proposal is nothing more than a wish list," Schmitt asserts. "It fails to consider the reality that people are already struggling with higher prices for basic necessities like groceries, gas, and utilities. We simply cannot afford to fulfill the governor's desires."

Schmitt believes that it is now the responsibility of the General Assembly to craft a budget that takes into account the financial limitations faced by taxpayers. As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, he plans to participate in budget hearings to analyze the state's finances and work towards a budget that respects taxpayers.

With concerns over the sustainability and affordability of Governor Shapiro's proposed spending plan, Representative Schmitt urges a more cautious and responsible approach to ensure the financial stability of Pennsylvania.
