The Senate Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee has advanced legislation aimed at increasing pensions for disabled veterans in Pennsylvania. Senate Bill 534, proposed by Senators Judy Ward (R-30) and Devlin Robinson (R-37), seeks to raise the monthly pension from $150 to $180 for veterans who endured service-related injuries leading to blindness, paralysis, or the loss of two or more limbs.

"For more than two decades, these critical pension programs have remained unchanged while the cost of living has continued to rise," Ward commented. "This modest increase is the least we can do to support the men and women who have heroically sacrificed so much in service to our nation."

Presently, qualifying Pennsylvania veterans receive $150 monthly under these programs, with the last adjustment made in 1999. If passed, the legislation is anticipated to provide essential financial assistance to approximately 2,500 veterans throughout the state.

Robinson stated, "It is past time for the legislature to take action and put more money back in the pockets of our heroes. I am proud to co-sponsor this legislation with Sen. Judy Ward to continue advocating for fellow Pennsylvania veterans."

As of late last year, there were 98 beneficiaries of the Blind Veterans Pension Program, while the Amputee and Paralyzed Veterans Pension Program reached 2,345 individuals. The bill now proceeds to the full Senate for further deliberation.
