Rep. Rich Irvin of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives has shared his thoughts on Governor Josh Shapiro's proposed state budget for the upcoming fiscal year. The $45.8 billion budget, representing a 6% increase from the current year's budget, was presented to a joint session of the General Assembly.
Irvin expressed concern over several aspects of the proposal, emphasizing the economic challenges faced by families and businesses in Pennsylvania. "Families are struggling with increased energy, gas and grocery bills and businesses are struggling to find qualified workers to fill needed positions," he stated. He highlighted the importance of addressing inflation, supply issues, and workforce development as key areas needing attention.
While acknowledging some positive elements in Shapiro's plan, such as increased support for the Pennsylvania State Police and prioritizing funding for career and technical education, Irvin criticized other components. Specifically, he opposed proposals to legalize marijuana, double the minimum wage, and introduce new programs that could deplete financial reserves meant for future tax increases or emergencies.
"This budget sounds good in theory," Irvin commented, "but the numbers don’t add up." He stressed his commitment to advocating for restrained spending focused on essential government functions rather than expanding programs that might jeopardize the state's financial stability.
Despite his concerns, Irvin remains optimistic about collaborative efforts within the General Assembly to develop a final budget plan that incorporates effective strategies alongside sound fiscal policy.
