Senator Judy Ward and Representative Scott Barger have announced the distribution of over $245,000 in grants to fire departments and emergency medical services in Blair County. The funding is part of the Fire Company and Emergency Medical Service Grant Program administered by the Office of the State Fire Commissioner.

“These annual grant awards support the needs of our Fire and EMS providers so they are equipped to help those who call on them in times of desperate need,” said Ward. She emphasized the importance of first responders, especially in rural areas, acknowledging their dedication and hard work.

Barger noted the increasing responsibilities faced by first responders. “Our first responders, particularly those with all-volunteer departments, not only serve their friends and neighbors by providing life- and property-saving interventions, but they are spending more and more time training, fundraising and handling administrative functions,” he said. He described these grants as a way to show appreciation and alleviate some burdens.

The funding can be utilized for facilities, equipment, debt reduction, training, education, and overtime costs for career departments covering shifts during firefighter training.
