Sens. Lisa Baker, Judy Ward, and David Argall have announced plans to introduce legislation aimed at restoring the original name of the Central Scranton Expressway. This initiative is a response to public discontent following former President Joe Biden's decision to commute Michael Conahan's sentence. Conahan was involved in the "Kids for Cash" scandal, which corrupted Pennsylvania’s juvenile justice system.
Senator Baker stated, “The decision to commute Michael Conahan’s sentence is incomprehensible and unjust. This action reopens old wounds for victims and their families and undermines the progress made to ensure such abuse of power is never repeated. Restoring the Central Scranton Expressway name is a meaningful way to honor those impacted by this tragedy.”
In 2021, Scranton City Council renamed the expressway after Biden. However, his recent commutation decision has reignited opposition, with many advocating for reverting the road's name.
“This commutation sends a terrible message to victims of abuse and those who fight for justice,” said Senator Ward. “Renaming the expressway is a small but significant step to reaffirm our commitment to integrity and accountability.”
Senator Argall added, “For the families affected by these crimes, the past few weeks have been painful. I hope to see quick action on this important legislation so Luzerne County can wash its hands of this disgraceful act by former President Biden.”
