The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has named a bridge on South Eagle Valley Road in Snyder Township, Blair County, as the Sergeant Major Charles B. Mills, Sr. Memorial Bridge. This designation honors the late Sergeant Major Mills for his service to both his country and community.

"Sergeant Major Charles Mills exemplifies what it means to selflessly serve his country and his community," stated Ward. "This bridge designation will ensure that everyone who travels this road will be reminded of his tremendous legacy and the incredible sacrifices he made for us all."

Mills, a longtime resident of Tyrone, was born in Northwood, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the Navy with three tours in Vietnam and additional assignments in Iceland and Panama before retiring after 14 years. Subsequently, he joined the Army National Guard as a recruiter and counselor, completing 31 years of service with numerous medals including the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts.

In retirement, Mills continued serving through roles such as Police Chief in various boroughs and townships. He also contributed to preserving veterans' stories through books and served multiple terms on the Tyrone Borough Council.

Friend Martin Gillman remarked on Mills' dedication: "Charlie... loved this community... He did a lot behind the scenes that people didn’t realize." Doug Walker added, "He was a hero in my book for what he did for his country as well as never wanting to be recognized for his generosity."

Mills passed away recently at age 86. His wife Jeanie expressed gratitude: "We are so humbled by the honor of allowing his legacy to live on... We know he would be beyond proud to have this bridge bear his name."
