A bridge dedicated today in Blair County will carry signage noting it is named for Army Cpl. Clyde E. Walter Jr., who was killed while serving in the Vietnam War.

Walter’s family joined Rep. Jim Gregory (R-Blair) and Sen. Judy Ward (R-Blair/Fulton/Huntingdon/Juniata/Mifflin) in dedicating the bridge, which is on Ski Gap Road in Greenfield Township.

“Even when injured himself, Cpl. Walter provided cover for his platoon to get to a safer position as gunfire rained onto them,” Gregory said. “The signs for Cpl. Clyde E. Walter Jr. Memorial Bridge will commemorate his heroics and sacrifice. The ideals upheld by this young man from the Martinsburg area are so aspirational.”

The bridge over South Poplar Run is used by about 1,400 motorists every day.

Walter attended Martinsburg’s Central High School and worked at Pennsylvania Shoe Co. before entering the U.S. Army in September 1969. He was killed in action on Oct. 11, 1970, while serving with the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). Walter was posthumously awarded a Silver Star for his actions in combat.
