"'Must-admit’ nursing home orders willfully and deliberately disregarded CDC and CMS guidance.”
Washington, DC – On May 19, Congressman John Joyce, M.D. (PA-13), joined a Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic hearing to address critical errors made by Public Health officials in Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey during the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the hearing, Dr. Joyce questioned Dr. David Grabowski, Professor of Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School, about “Must-admit” orders in Pennsylvania and other states that went against Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) guidance. Dr. Grabowski confirmed that these policy decisions were made in error.
“It’s clear now that those who had a duty to protect our most vulnerable and high-risk individuals failed and fell short of the oath to ‘First, do no harm’,” said Dr. Joyce. “On March 13, 2020, CMS issued guidance for Nursing Homes and Long-Term Care Facilities intending to serve as a blueprint for individual states, to best prevent and control COVID-19 outbreaks in nursing homes — this was not a directive for nursing homes to unsafely accept COVID-19 positive patients.”
