Senator Judy Ward, along with Representatives Lou Schmitt and Scott Barger, announced that the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST) has approved over $12 million in low-interest loans for water infrastructure projects in Blair County. The funding aims to improve water quality and reliability for residents.
Senator Ward emphasized the importance of these investments: “These investments will ensure that our community members are provided reliable and quality water to their homes and businesses, with infrastructure that will last for years to come.” She noted that the PENNVEST funding would help reduce financial burdens on local communities.
The Altoona Water Authority is set to receive $9.75 million for upgrades at the Kettle and Horseshoe Curve water treatment facilities. This project involves replacing outdated equipment to prevent health hazards or service interruptions. It also includes replacing chemical storage tanks at the Horseshoe Curve facility.
Representative Schmitt highlighted the significance of reliable clean water access: “Ensuring residents have access to a reliable source of clean water is paramount.” He thanked PENNVEST for supporting this crucial infrastructure update.
The Roaring Spring Municipal Authority will get $2.325 million to replace aging pump stations with a new facility serving dual purposes—water withdrawal from Roaring Spring Reservoir and pressure provision for distribution. New chlorination equipment will be installed as part of this project.
Representative Barger spoke about Roaring Spring’s historical connection to its water source: “Roaring Spring gets its name from a powerful water source that produced 80 million gallons a day at its peak.”
Both projects align with state land use planning and farmland preservation efforts, with work expected to start later this year.
PENNVEST provides financial assistance for various water-related projects across Pennsylvania communities.
